When a problem is encountered with a locomotive several immediate questions should be answered:

a)   Has the loco been placed wheels down on a carpet?

It is possible that a small piece of metal has been caught in the drive mechanism or is shorting out on the chassis and electrical pick-ups

b)   Has the loco been dropped?

Any shock may dislodge brushes or wiring

c)   Are the con rods running free?

The slightest bending of rods may well cause the drive to stick

d)   Is the loco lacking lubricant?

A loco that has stood for some time may well have dried out and may require lubrication
